Abstract

Putri, Yulinda Kumala. 126203211085. 2025. The Effectiveness of Using Starfall Application on the Fourth Grade Students’ Phonemic Awareness at SDI Al-Hidayah Samir. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University (UIN) of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor. Dr. Nany Soengkono Madayani, SS. M.Pd. Keywords: Effectiveness, Phonemic Awareness, Starfall Application Reading is a crucial skill involving the decoding of written symbols into meaningful ideas, making it essential for communication and understanding the world. In the context of English for Young Learners (EYL), teaching reading requires methods that accommodate developmental needs, particularly due to the complexity of the English alphabetic system. One essential component in this process is phonemic awareness, which refers to the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds within words. Phonemic awareness significantly influences reading proficiency and predicts future reading success. Various technologies, such as multimedia applications, offer promising support in developing phonemic awareness by providing interactive and engaging learning experiences. Based on this rationale, the researcher conducted a study entitled "The Effectiveness of Using Starfall Application on the Fourth Grade Students’ Phonemic Awareness at SDI Al-Hidayah Samir," aiming to fill the gap in previous studies that have not sufficiently explored this topic in Indonesian EFL contexts. The research problem addressed whether the use of the Starfall application was effective on the students’ phonemic awareness. This study employed a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design with a quantitative approach. The sample consisted of 23 fourth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. The instrument used was a phonemic awareness test comprising 45 oral questions. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 24 through the Paired Sample T-Test formula. The results revealed a significant improvement in students’ phonemic awareness scores after the treatment. The mean score increased from 21.78 in the pre-test to 34.86 in the post-test. The statistical analysis showed a significance value of 0.000, which is lower than the standard level of 0.05, indicating that the null hypothesis was rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of the Starfall application was effective on the fourth-grade students’ phonemic awareness at SDI Al-Hidayah Samir.
