Abstract
Patria, Farchan Hadi. Students Registered Number, 126203212138, 2025. Exploring Non-English Major Students’ Perspectives on Using Spotify for English Vocabulary Learning at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Muhammad Zen Masruri, M.Pd. Keywords: Students’ Perception, Spotify, Vocabulary Learning, Digital Media, Non-English Majors Vocabulary is one of the most important aspects of learning English. In the era of Society 5.0, many students prefer to learn using digital media. One platform that offers rich English content is Spotify, which provides songs, podcasts, and audiobooks that are easy to access and enjoyable to use. This study explored the perception and experience of non-English department students in using Spotify to improve their English vocabulary. This research used a sequential explanatory mixed-method design. The quantitative data were collected through a questionnaire given to 118 non-English department students of UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung in the academic year 2024/2025. The qualitative data were collected through structured interviews with 6 selected participants. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The findings showed that most students had positive perceptions toward Spotify as a vocabulary learning tool. Students believed that Spotify exposed them to new vocabulary, supported flexible learning, and helped them understand word meaning, spelling, pronunciation, and usage. Features such as synchronized lyrics and curated playlists were considered helpful. Students also stated that learning vocabulary through Spotify was more enjoyable and less stressful than traditional methods. However, some challenges were noted, including difficulty understanding certain accents, needing external support for word meanings, and facing distractions from content or environment. Overall, the study concluded that Spotify is a practical, motivating, and effective tool for improving English vocabulary, especially when used regularly and strategically.
