Abstract

In today’s digital era, there is a growing phenomenon where teenagers spend significant amount of time in social media particularly on TikTok. Given the data, rather than just being entertainment media, TikTok has the potential to serve as an open educational resource, especially in the context of vocabulary mastery. The formulation of the problem in this research is: “Is there any correlation between the frequency of being engaged with English content on TikTok and students’ vocabulary mastery?”. The objective of this research was to determine the correlation between the frequency of being engaged with English content on TikTok and students’ vocabulary mastery at SMAN 1 Kauman Tulungagung. To achieve this, the researcher used a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The population of this research was the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 1 Kauman Tulungagung. The sample consisted of 37 students from class XI-B, selected through purposive sampling based on their active engagement with English content on TikTok. The instrument used to collect the data was a questionnaire to measure frequency of students’ engagement and a vocabulary mastery test. The data were analyzed using the Spearman Rank Correlation Formula in the SPSS 25.00. The result of the research based on the correlation coefficient number, with rcount = 0.329, it indicated a positive low relationship between the correlation between the frequency of being engaged with English content (X) and students’ vocabulary mastery (Y). Therefore, H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. The finding of this study suggests that frequent engagement with English content on TikTok can contribute to students’ vocabulary development. This opens up opportunities for educators to consider integrating curated TikTok content into language learning activities or encouraging students to engage with educational content on the platform.
