Abstract
Listening is one of the essential skills in learning English, yet many students find it difficult and less engaging. To address this issue, teachers need to apply innovative teaching strategies that encourage student participation and improve comprehension. One such method is giving short story using Problem Based Learning (PBL), which allows students to enjoy the learning process while solving real-life problems. The research problem is "Is there a significant different on students’ listening achievement when taught short story using Problem Based Learning and those taught via lecturing?". The objective of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of short story using Problem Based Learning (PBL) technique in teaching listening skill of the 8th graders at MTsN 5 Tulungagung. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with two groups: an experimental group that received the treatment taught short story using PBL, and a control group taught short story via lecturing. The sample consisted of eighth graders, with 54 participants divided into two classes. Data were collected through a series of pre-tests and post-tests using multiplechoice and fill in the blank. The collected data were analyzed using Independent Sample T-Test in SPSS 21 version to examine the significant of the different in students' listening scores. The research findings showed that the mean score of the experimental class increased significantly after the treatment, while the control class showed only a slight improvement. The result of independent sample T-test indicated a confirmed that the difference between the two groups was statistically significant. These results suggest that short story using Problem Based Learning is an effective method for improving students’ listening skills in English.
