Abstract

Mastering English proficiency has increasingly become a vital objective for university students, as it plays a crucial role in supporting their academic progress and enhancing their future employability. At UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung, the Test of English Proficiency (TOEP) serves as one of the benchmarks to assess this competence. Against this backdrop, the current study seeks to examine the strategies adopted by English Education Department students who managed to achieve scores exceeding 450 on the TOEP. This research applied a descriptive qualitative approach, involving ten participants who had met or surpassed the designated score. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and examined using thematic analysis to uncover common patterns in how students prepared for and approached the test. The study particularly focused on the strategies utilized in three main sections of the TOEP: Listening, Structure and Written Expression, and Reading Comprehension, as well as the learning resources participants engaged with during their preparation. The findings aim to offer meaningful contributions for both future test-takers and educators by providing insights into effective preparation techniques and support mechanisms that can enhance English language proficiency outcomes.
