Abstract

The thesis entitled “Teaching English to Visually-Impaired Students at SLB Negeri 1 Kota Blitar” was written by Yunita Adji Lestari. NIM. 17203163082, Advisor: Dr. Ida Isnawati, M.Pd. This thesis discusses Teaching English to Visually-impaired Students at SLB Negeri 1 Kota Blitar. Since English is the most important subjects that have been taught in every school, the researcher wants to describe how the teaching learning process of English in visually-impaired students class. The formulation of the research problems were: 1) what is the strategy used by the teacher to teach English to visually-impaired students in SLB Negeri 1 Kota Blitar? 2) what is the teaching material used by the teacher to teach English to visually-impaired students in SLB Negeri 1 Kota Blitar? 3) what is the teaching media used by the teacher to teach English to visually-impaired students in SLB Negeri 1 Kota Blitar? 4) how does the teacher evaluate to measure the students’ English mastery in SLB Negeri 1 Kota Blitar?. The research has some purposes namely to describe the strategy used by the teacher to teach English to visually-impaired students in SLB Negeri 1 Kota Blitar, to describe the teaching material used by the teacher to teach English to visually-impaired students in SLB Negeri 1 Kota Blitar, to describe the teaching media used by the teacher to teach English to visually-impaired students in SLB Negeri 1 Kota Blitar, to describe how the teacher conducts evaluation to measure visually-impaired students’ English mastery in SLB Negeri 1 Kota Blitar. This thesis has collected the data from observed, interviewed, and documentation. This research is a Descriptive Study with Qualitative approach. This research shows the result of this study is the strategy, material, media, and evaluation used by the teacher. The strategies used by the teacher to teach English to visually-impaired students are Classical Strategy and Listen and Repeat. The teacher used the strategy that suits with the condition of the students. The English materials that have been taught by the teacher to visually-impaired students are greeting, vocabularies, and simple present tense. These materials are the material that useful in their daily life, so they can easily practice it. The media used by the teacher to deliver English material to visually-impaired students are Braille, song, and story text. The teacher used Braille as the main media since the students was students with visually impairment. The use of Braille was applied by the teacher to make the students understand the spelling and how to pronounce English word. The teacher evaluates the students in every meeting before the meeting was end to make sure their understanding about the material that has been taught. Scheduled tests are also carried out by the school such as Mid-term test and Final test. In this research, the teacher determined all of the teaching need based on the students ability.
