Abstract
The thesis entitled “Students Difficulties and Mitigating Strategies in Understanding Figurative Language in Selected Popular Song Lyrics by SZA” was written by Fara Nabila, NIM 126203213188, English Education Departement, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, supervised by Dr. Nurul Chojimah, M.Pd. Keywords: figurative language, song lyrics, difficulties, mitigate The expressions and feelings of a songwriter are very diverse, so a songwriter always has a unique way to convey his feelings, and one of them is by using figurative language in song lyrics. As song listeners, especially English language learners, they often encounter various types of figurative language in song lyrics that often cause difficulties in understanding their meaning. Therefore, this research looks for some difficulties experienced by English language learners and also what solutions they use to overcome difficulties when understanding SZA's song lyrics. The research problems in this research are: (1) what difficulties do students face in understanding figurative language in SZA’s song lyrics, (2) What strategies do students use to mitigate their difficulties in understanding figurative language in SZA’s song lyrics. The purpose of this research is to find out the difficulties in understanding figurative language in SZA's song lyrics and how to mitigate these difficulties based on the experience of 8th semester English learners who like SZA's songs in Universitas Islam Negeri Sayyid Ali Rahmatullaah Tulungagung. This research used qualitative phenomenological research . This research obtained the following results: (1) Students difficulties are implicit meaning interpreting, knowledge about figurative language, determining the types of figurative language, context understanding, vocabulary, language barrier, cultural differences. (2) Students mitigating strategies are reading and listening song repeatedly, learning about figurative language, searching the explanation in the TikTok, peer discussion, translating difficult vocabulary, knowing the singer background.
