Abstract

The thesis entitled “Students’ Perceptions of Using Instagram Reels as Media in Learning Speaking Among English Education Department Students” was written by Nailil Muna Irdiana, NIM 126203211053, English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, supervised by Dr. Hj. Ida Isnawati, M.Pd. Keywords: Perception, Instagram Reels, Speaking. Students' perceptions of learning media hold an important role in the learning process. Instagram Reels is a feature on the Instagram social media platform that allows users to create and share short videos creatively, which is now beginning to be utilized in educational contexts, particularly in learning speaking skills in English. There are not many studies that discuss about students’ perceptions of using Instagram Reels in learning speaking among University students. Therefore, it is important to understand how students perceive the use of this media and to what extent Instagram Reels supports to enhancing their speaking skills. This study aims to determine students' perceptions of using Instagram Reels as media in learning speaking among English Education Department Students at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. The focus of this research is to explore the advantages and challenges faced in using Instagram Reels in learning speaking. By understanding these advantages and challenges, the study aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the use of Instagram Reels in speaking learning. This study used a quantitative approach with a survey design, and the data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics techniques. The instrument used in this research was a questionnaire in the form of a Likert scale. It involved 110 6th semesters of the English Education Department Students at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung who have used Instagram Reels to learning speaking. The results of the study showed that most students had a positive perception of using Instagram Reels as media for learning speaking. Instagram Reels was considered interesting, easily accessible, and capable of enhancing students’ creativity and motivation in practicing English speaking, thereby supporting a more interactive and enjoyable learning process. However, students also faced several challenges, such as a lack of confidence when speaking in front of the camera, fear of negative comments, and technical issues such as unstable internet connections and limited devices.
