Keywords: Language Functions, Film, Formal realization of Language Function, Conversational Fragment. Language is the main key and the system of communication. In using language, people talk differently in different situations with different listeners. However, communication depends not only on recognizing the meaning of the words in every utterances but also on recognizing what speakers mean by their utterances. Understanding the connection between the forms and the functions of language is very important because it will help us to explain the interpretation of language. This study attempts to analyze language functions, whose main objective is to discover types of language functions used by the characters in the Miracle Worker movie. It explores the kinds of language functions in the conversational fragments of movie, and expected to have contribution to values of authentic teaching material which eventually helps to cope with the problems of developing English skills of the students, especially listening and speaking. The research problems of this study are: 1) what types of function are found in the Miracle Worker Movie? 2) How are the function formally realized in the Miracle Worker Movie? 3) How are the frequency of each type of language function in the Miracle Worker Movie? The purposes of this study were: 1) to find out language functions is employed by speakers in conversation in movie entitled Miracle Worker 2) to know the formal realization of language functions employed by speakers in conversation in the movie 3) to know the frequency of each type of language function employed by speakers in the movie. The research design of this study is descriptive quantitative survey. It is intended to know the quantitative distributions of the language functions used in the movie. The data are the utterances used in the conversations occuring in the Miracle Worker movie that contains particular functions. The data are taken from the script of Miracle Worker movie along with their contexts derived from movies scenes. This study found that: 1) there are 27 utterances that is 34% containing directive function, 21 utterances that is 27% containing expressive function, 11 utterances that is 14% containing referential function, 11 utterances that is 11% containg poetic function, 5 utterances that is 7% containing phatic function, and 4 utterances that is 5% containing metalinguistic function. 2) the utterances containing expressive function are formally realized in 17 declarative sentences that is 81%, 3 imperative sentences that is14%, and 1 interrogative sentences that is 5%, While directive functions are realized in 18 imperative sentences that is 64%, 8 declarative sentences that is 30%, 1 interrogative sentences that is 3%. Then utterances containing referential function are realized in 11 interrogative sentences that is 100%, metalinguistic function is realized in 2 declarative sentences that is 50% and 2 interrogative sentences that is 50%. The next, utterances containing poetic functions are realized in 11 declarative sentences that is 100%, and phatic function in 3 declarative sentences that is 60% and 2 imperative sentences that is 40%. 3) the percentages of each type of language function are; 27% used expressive function, 34% used directive function, 14% used referential function, 5% used metalinguistic function, 14% used poetic function, 7% used phatic function. Based on the results of this study, the researcher wants to give suggestion for the future research. The reasearcher of the same interest can conduct the research with the same topic but in different subjects. So, it can give more complete information for the subject. The next researcher can use the students in junior high school, senior high school, or in both of them. It might result in different results because of cultural differences.
