Abstract

This study responded to the implementation of the English Morning Class (EMC) program at SMP Islam Al Azhaar Tulungagung, which aims to improve students’ English proficiency through daily exposure and practice in the morning. Preliminary observations indicated that the program had not yet been supported by standardized and engaging learning media, resulting in students’ reading literacy remaining relatively low. Reading literacy is a fundamental competency in 21st-century learning, as it plays an important role in developing comprehension, critical thinking, and academic success. Therefore, an innovative learning medium was needed to support the EMC program while enhancing students’ reading literacy skills. This study aimed to develop a digital learning medium in the form of a flipbook that is valid, practical, and effective in improving the reading literacy skills of seventh-grade students in the EMC program at SMP Islam Al Azhaar Tulungagung. Valid refers to the appropriateness of the media content and design based on expert judgment, practical refers to the ease and attractiveness of the media in classroom use, and effective refers to its ability to improve students’ reading literacy skills. In addition, this study also aimed to determine the feasibility of the media through expert validation and to examine students’ and teachers’ responses to the developed product. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, which consisted of five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. In the analysis stage, the researcher identified students’ needs and the EMC learning context. In the design stage, the structure and layout of the flipbook were planned based on learning needs. In the development stage, the flipbook was created using the Book Creator application and validated by material and media experts. In the implementation stage, the product was tested on seventh-grade students during EMC activities. In the evaluation stage, the effectiveness of the media was assessed based on learning outcomes and user responses, followed by product revision. The findings showed that the developed flipbook had a high level of feasibility based on expert validation and was considered valid for use. Students’ and teachers’ responses also indicated that the media was practical, engaging, and easy to use in learning activities. The implementation results demonstrated that the digital flipbook was effective in improving students’ reading literacy skills, as shown by the increase in students’ mean scores from 76.16 on the pre-test to 90.40 on the post-test. The N-Gain score of 0.6252 (62.52%) was categorized as medium improvement, indicating that the flipbook was quite effective. Furthermore, the paired sample t-test showed a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores (t = - 27.358, p = .000 < 0.05), confirming the effectiveness of the digital flipbook. In conclusion, the digital flipbook can serve as an innovative, valid, practical, and effective medium to support the English Morning Class (EMC) program and enhance students’ reading literacy skills.
