Abstract

Roro Mayang Maharani (126203211066). The Effectiveness of U-Dictionary Application on Students’ Vocabulary Mastery at Seventh Grade of MTsN 6 Tulungagung. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Universuty Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Keywords: vocabulary mastery, U-Dictionary, digital learning, pre-experimental research, English education. Vocabulary mastery is fundamental in language learning, particularly at the junior high school level. However, many learners face difficulties in acquiring vocabulary effectively due to the lack of enganging and meaningful learning strategies. One potetial solution is the integration of mobile-assisted language learning (MALL), particulary through the use of the U-Dictionary application, which offers interactive features such as word definitions, camera translation, and daily vocabulary. This study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the U-Dictionary application in improving the vocabulary mastery of seventh grade students at MTsN 6 Tulungagung. The research applied a quantitative method with a pre-experimental one group pre test and post-test design. The theory supporting this study is based on Schmitt”s theory of vocabulary learning (2015) and Kukulska-Hulme of mobile assisted language learning (2020). The population was seventh-grade students at MTsN 6 Tulungagung, and the sample consisted of 32 students from class VII A, selected through purposive sampling. The instrument used was a vocabulary test containing multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, matching, and oral items. The treatment was carried out in three meetings, focusing on affixed and non-affixed forms of nouns and verbs using various U-Dictionary features. The results showed a significant increase in students’ vocabulary mastery after the treatment. The mean score improved from 70.16 in the pre-test to 76.09 in the post test. The paired sample t-test indicated a significance value of 0.000, which is lower than 0.05, confirming the effectiveness of the treatment. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the U-Dictionary application is effective in enhancing vocabulary mastery and can serve as a practical and interactive learning tool in English language instruction. In conclusion, the use of U-Dictionary is effective in enhancing students’ vocabulary mastery. This application supports more enganging and autonomous learning, especially in understanding morphological forms such as affixed and non affixed words. It is suggested that English teachers incorporate mobile applications into their teaching strategies, and future researchers may explore other aspects of language learning using similiar digital tools.
