Abstract

Thesis entitled “The Effectiveness of Using Duolingo Application on Students’ Vocabulary Mastery of the Eighth Grade at MTsS GUPPI Pogalan Trenggalek” written by Firnanda Aprilia Rosyidah, Student ID Number. 1860203223218. English Education Study Program, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. H. Nursamsu, S.Pd.I., M.Pd. Keywords: Duolingo, Vocabulary Mastery, Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL), Madrasah. Vocabulary mastery is one of the fundamental components of English language learning because it supports students in understanding and using English effectively. However, many students still experience difficulties in mastering English vocabulary due to limited engagement and the use of conventional learning methods. The integration of Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL), particularly through the Duolingo application, offers an interactive learning environment that may enhance students' vocabulary mastery. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether there was a significant difference in students' vocabulary mastery before and after learning through the Duolingo application. This study employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental one group pretest-posttest design. The participants were 26 eighth-grade students of MTsS GUPPI Pogalan Trenggalek selected through total sampling. Data were collected using a 50-item vocabulary test measuring vocabulary meaning, spelling, and usage. The treatment was conducted through Duolingo-based learning activities consisting of translation, matching, listening, fill-in-the-blank, and repetition exercises. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro Wilk normality test, a paired-sample t-test, and N-Gain analysis with the assistance of SPSS version 25. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students' vocabulary mastery after the implementation of the Duolingo application. The mean score increased from 60.69 on the pre-test to 81.62 on the post-test, with a mean difference of 20.92 points. The paired-sample t-test showed a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores. Furthermore, the N-Gain score was 0.5550, indicating a moderate level of improvement. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Duolingo application is effective in improving the vocabulary mastery of the eighth-grade students at MTsS GUPPI Pogalan Trenggalek and can be utilized as an alternative learning medium for English vocabulary instruction.
