Abstract

This thesis entitled “Teaching Practices through Utilizing YouTube Media to Facilitate the Hospitality Students in Learning Speaking at SMKN 2 Boyolangu” was written by Carissa Putri Salsabila, NIM 1860203222090, English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, supervised by Dr. Susanto, SS., M.Pd. Keywords: Teaching Practice, YouTube Media, Speaking Ability, Hospitality Students. Speaking skill is one of the important abilities that should be mastered by hospitality students because communication is needed in hospitality services and field work practice (PKL). To facilitate the students to be able to communicate during conducting field work practice (PKL), it is important for the students to be skillful in pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and self-confidence during speaking activities. Therefore, an English teacher of SMKN 2 Boyolangu has used YouTube media to support students’ speaking learning process by creating more contextual and interactive learning activities. The formulation of the research problems were: (1) How are the procedures of utilizing YouTube media in teaching speaking for Hospitality Students at SMKN 2 Boyolangu? (2) What learning activities do Hospitality students engage in during YouTube-based speaking learning at SMKN 2 Boyolangu? (3) To what extent does the use of YouTube media contribute to the students during the teaching and learning speaking for Hospitality Students at SMKN 2 Boyolangu? This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive case study design. The subjects of this study were one English teacher and six students of class X Hospitality 3 (X-PH 3) for FGD at SMKN 2 Boyolangu. The data were collected through observation, interviews, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and documentation. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings showed that: (1) The teacher conducted several procedures during speaking instruction through YouTube media, namely preparing, explaining the material, using YouTube videos, guiding students, giving feedback, and conducting reflection; (2) The students were actively involved in various learning activities such as watching videos, discussing dialogues, taking notes on vocabulary, and practicing speaking through role-play activities; and (3) The participants perceived that YouTube media supported students’ّspeaking ability in both linguistic and non-linguistic aspects, such as pronunciation, vocabulary, confidence, motivation, and communication readiness for hospitality situations and field work practice (PKL).
