Abstract
The thesis entitled "The Character Development and Characterization of Alex Lilly in the Movie Weapons" was written by Rahma Aulia Salsabilla, NIM 1860203222084, English Education Department, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, Universitas Islam Negeri Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung, supervised by Emmi Naja, Ph. D. Keywords: Character Development, Characterization, Movie Analysis, English Language Teaching Movie serves as authentic materials that enrich English Language Teaching (ELT) through exposure to natural language and complex human behavior. The study of character development and characterization in movies is particularly relevant to ELT, as it equips learners with analytical tools to interpret narrative, understand human behavior, and engage critically with authentic texts. Previous studies on character development and characterization in movies have generally treated these aspects separately and rarely linked them to ELT. This study addresses that gap by analyzing the character of Alex Lilly in the movie Weapons (2025), directed by Zach Cregger. This study is guided by two research questions: (1) how is Alex Lilly's character development portrayed based on Roberts and Zweig's character change theory, and (2) what forms of characterization are used to portray him. This study aims to analyze his character development and identify the forms of characterization used. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research design. The data consist of Alex Lilly's dialogues, actions, gestures, and interactions taken directly from the movie. The data were collected through repeated systematic viewing of the movie and script reading to confirm the accuracy of dialogues and timestamps. Following Creswell's framework, the data were collected and analyzed through five stages: organizing the data, repeatedly watching the movie, coding the data using a characterization analysis table and a character development coding sheet, generating themes, and representing the findings through descriptive narratives. The findings reveal that Alex Lilly's character development encompasses all four types described by Roberts and Zweig: static (3), progressive (8), regressive (6), and mixed (3), moving from suppressed introversion through coerced regression to self-sacrificial resistance. In terms of characterization, all five forms proposed by Baldick and Bodden (2008) were identified across 28 data points, with action (11) as the dominant device. These findings confirm that both frameworks remain productive for psychological horror cinema and offer material for ELT.
