Key words: Effectiveness, Vocabulary, Domino Card Game Vocabulary is the one component in English and is one important aspect in learning a foreign language. Sometimes, in teaching vocabulary the teacher explained the methods that are less interesting and the students became bored. To make the teaching vocabulary interesting, suitable media is very important to be used. One of the interesting media used is using modified domino card game. Domino card is a card that has words, numbers, or pictures on it and that is used to help students learn about a subject. Using this media, the students are able to see the picture on domino card, the students can match the words and pictures or match words to their meaning. The students imagine that pictures what they see. As a result, they can be easier to understand and memorize the vocabulary. The formulation of the research problems were: (1) How is the students’ score in vocabulary mastery before being taught by using Modified Domino Card Game at seventh grade of MTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang Tulungagung in the academic year 2016/2017? (2) How is the students’ score in vocabulary mastery after being taught by using Modified Domino Card Game at seventh grade of MTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang Tulungagung in the academic year 2016/2017? (3) Is there any significant different scores on the students’ in vocabulary mastery before and after being taught by using Modified Domino Card Game at seventh grade of MTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang Tulungagung in the academic year 2016/2017? The purposes of this research were to: (1) find out the students’ score in vocabulary mastery before being taught by using Modified Domino Card Game at seventh grade of MTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang Tulungagung in the academic year 2016/2017, (2) find out the students’ score in vocabulary mastery after being taught by using Modified Domino Card Game at seventh grade of MTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang Tulungagung in the academic year 2016/2017, (3) find out the significant different scores on the students’ in vocabulary mastery before and after being taught by using Modified Domino Card Game at seventh grade of MTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang Tulungagung in the academic year 2016/2017. The research design was used pre-experimental research design by using one group pre-test post-test with quantitative approach. The population of this research was all students of seventh grade at MTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang Tulungagung. The sample was the students of seven C class of MTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang Tulungagung in which the total of them are 35 students consisting of 21 males and 14 females through purposive sampling. The research instrument was tests. In this study, the researcher conducted three steps: there are pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The data analysis was analyzed using IBM SPSS 16.0 version by using T-test. The results of this study showed that the mean of total scores of students’ vocabulary mastery before being taught by using Modified Domino Card Game was (60.91). The mean of total scores of students’ vocabulary mastery after being taught by using Modified Domino Card Game was (77.71). Statistical computation using T-test showed the result of tcount was 12.263 with df was 34 and the ttable at 0.05% level of significance is 2.042. It was known that t-count was higher than t-table (12.263 > 2.042). The significance value was 0.000 and the significance level was 0.05. It means that the significance value was smaller than significance level (0.000 < 0.05). This means that alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. In conclusion, there was significant difference of the students’ score in vocabulary mastery before being taught by using Modified Domino Card Game and after being taught by using Modified Domino Card Game. It can be concluded that Modified Domino Card Game was effective in teaching vocabulary to junior high school, especially for seventh grade students of MTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang Tulungagung. The Modified Domino Card Game was recommended for the teacher to teach vocabulary by using Modified Domino Card Game.
