ABSTRACT Moestofa, Mohammad Ridho. 2813133074. Improving Students’ Vocabulary Mastery Through Short Story as Media at MTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang Tulungagung in Academic Year 2016/2017. Sarjana Thesis. Keywords: Improving, Vocabulary, Short Story as Media Vocabulary as an element of language that considered as the most important factor in improving four language skills’ mastery. Everyone are not able to them, without mastering vocabulary in advance. In fact, most students’ of MTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang Tulungagung, especially in eight graders have a problem in their English learning. Mainly, in their vocabulay mastery, because of their lack of vocabulary. Many students’ find difficulties in English. Moreover, short story is one of media that are students like most. There are many vocabulary in short story are able to help students in learning English to increase their comprehension in English. The statement of the problem in this research is “how can the vocabulary mastery of the 8th grader students of MTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang Tulungagung be improved through the implementation of short story as Media ?” The purpose of the study is how this media could improve the students’ vocabulary mastery in the eight grade of MTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang Tulungagung. The design of this research was classroom action research (CAR) based on the model of Kemmis & Taggart. The procedure include planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The subject of this study were 36 students of eight grade of class E. The criteria of success could passed if the students got score on test more than 70. As the finding, it shown that there was an improvemenrt of the students vocabulay mastery from the preliminary observation study showed that students’ average score is 5.2. in the result of cycle 1 showed that the students average score is 5.4, only slightly than the previous one. However, in the Cycle 2 the students’ average score was increase significantly than the previous, students average score was 7.9. As the conclusions of the study, based on students of MTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang Tulungagung using of Short Story as Media proven effective to increased the students vocabulary mastery. It proved that the Students’ vocabulary mastery of MTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang Tulungagung was increase signifanctly than the previous.
