Abstract
The use of appropriate instructional models in English language learning plays a crucial role in helping students understand grammatical aspects, particularly tenses. One instructional model that can enhance student engagement in the learning process is Project-Based Learning (PjBL). This model encourages students to actively construct knowledge through meaningful and collaborative project-based activities. This study aims to determine whether Project-Based Learning (PjBL) can be used effective on students’ mastery of English tenses. The research question is:“Is there a significant difference in the mastery of English tenses between students taught using the Project- Based Learning (PjBL) model and those taught using conventional methods among 11th- grade students at SMAN 6 Kediri?” This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a quantitative approach involving an experimental group and a control group. The population of this study consisted of all 11th- grade students at SMAN 6 Kediri. The sample was selected using purposive sampling: Class XI- 12, comprising 36 students, served as the experimental group, and Class XI- 11, comprising 36 students, served as the control group. The experimental group was taught using the Project- Based Learning (PjBL) model, while the control group was taught using conventional methods. The research instrument consisted of a test of English tense mastery in the form of a pre- test and post- test, comprising 20 multiple- choice questions. The research informasi were analyzed using an independent samples t- test with the assistance of SPSS version 27. The results of the study show that students taught using the Project- Based Learning (PjBL) model achieved a significantly higher of mastery of English tenses compared to students taught using conventional methods. The average post-test score for the experimental group was 82.64, while the control group scored an average of 67.50. An independent samples t- test revealed a p-value of 0. 000, which is less than 0. 05 (0. 000 < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference between the two groups. The mean difference of 15. 139 points favors the experimental group. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model is effective on students’ mastery of English tenses, particularly present tense, imperative sentences, and temproral conjunctions, at SMAN 6 Kediri.
