Abstract

ABSTRACT Izza, Aprilia Nur Afidatul: Student Registered Number: 17203153053, 2019. The Effectiveness of Four Corners Strategy toward Students’ Writing Ability in Hortatory Exposition Text at MA Al-Muslimun Lamongan in Academic year 2018/2019. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Muh. Basuni, M.Pd Keywords: Writing Skill, Four Corners, Hortatory Exposition. To make writing activity more enjoyable and exited, teacher should use appropriate strategies. By using appropriate strategies, may decrease students anxiousness and increase students’ achievement in writing. This research offers a strategy which can be an alternative to improve students’ writing ability especially in writing hortatory exposition text. The researcher uses four corners strategies as writing strategy. Four corners strategy is an approach that asks students to make decision about problem or question. The problem of the research are; (1) Is Four Corners Strategy Effective or not for teaching writing hortatory exposition text at Senior High School? (2) Is there any significant difference between students’ writing hortatory exposition text before and after being taught using four corners strategy at Senior High School? This research is aimed to; (1) To know whether four corners strategy effective or not to teaching writing hortatory exposition text at Senior High School. (2) To find out whether there is any significant different on the students’ writing hortatory exposition text before and after being taught using four corners strategy at Senior High School. In this study, the researcher used quantitative research with pre-experimental design one group pre-test post-test. It was conducted, 16th February 2019-24th February 2019. The population of this research is all of second grade of MIA at MA Al-Muslimun Lamongan consist of 35 students. The sample of this research is XI MIA 2 class within 15 students. The sampling technique was purposive sampling technique. The analysis of the data showed whether the data includes in non-parametric by testing normality and homogeneity. The researcher used SPSS 16.0 to calculate the data. The result of this research the T-test is -21.529, with the df = 14, and the p-value (two-tailed) is 0.000. Given that the present test is one-tailed test, so the p-value (0.000) is divide to: 0.000 /2= 0.000. Since 0.000 is smaller than significance level (α) 5% or 0.05, so the null hypothesis is rejected. It automatically accepts alternative hypothesis. It means that there is significance differences before and after being taught using four corners strategy in teaching writing hortatory exposition text.
