ABSTRACT Hanifah, Indaful. Student Registered Number 17203153097. 2019. “The Use Of Text Based Learning To Improve Students’ Vocabulary Mastery At The Fifth Grade Of MI Raden Fatah Kediri”. Thesis. English Education Program. The Facukty of Education and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Erna Iftanti, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: Text Based Learning, Strategy, Vocabulary Mastery. Learning foreign language such as English is not a simple thing. It needs an effort and spirit to learn and to persistence with the language. In Indonesia, English is the additional lesson not compulsory lesson in elementary school. As stated by Ministry of Education in 1994 (SK 170/105/1994), English must be introduced early. The most important component of English linguistics that must be introduced and mastered well is vocabulary. Mastering vocabulary can help mastering English. Vela and Rushidi (2016) in their study about the effect of keeping vocabulary notebook on vocabulary acquisition and learner autonomy said the importance of vocabulary. They said insufficient vocabulary will affect learner language achievement, such as oral and written input will lack of comprehension, and it make their language skill do not develop well. In this study, the researcher uses Text Based Learning to improve students’ vocabulary mastery at the fifth grade of MI Raden Fatah Kediri. The formulation of research problem in this study: How can text based learning improve students’ vocabulary mastery? Based on the research problem, this study is aimed to know how text based learning can improve the fifth grade students’ vocabulary mastery at MI Raden Fatah Kediri. The research method: 1) The research design used in this study is Classroom Action Research approach. 2) The subject of this study were the fifth grade of MI Raden Fatah Kediri which were consist of 21 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and each cycle consist of three meetings. The result of pre-test, cycle 1, and cycle 2 were showed positive progress. In cycle 1, the average score was 80, but the use Text Based Learning did not successful yet. The students faced some difficulties, such as pronunciation and writing a new word. Then, some revision must be done in cycle 2. In cycle 2 the average score was 90.47. It means increased from cycle 1. In implementing teaching and learning using Text Based Learning, it quite different with cycle 1. In cycle 1, a group work was chosen to do writing activity of the new word. But, in cycle 2, an individual work was more successful to know students writing ability. And it showed a positive result. The conclusion of this study, the students’ vocabulary mastery could be improved using text based learning. Because they got an experience using text and could know the meaning through the text.
