Keywords: Effectiveness, writing explanation text, Clustering Technique Writing explanation text often becomes a problem for the students. First, they find difficulties in gathering and organizing their ideas in a unity paragraph. Second, students do not have much idea of what to write and how to start writing explanation. Meanwhile, an explanation text is a kind of text used to explain the process of a social, natural scientific and cultural phenomena, events or action. The students have write their explanation text based on the fact of knowledge and understanding. The use of Clustering Technique helps the students’ writing process. Clustering is a process of pre-writing in order to make easier in generating the idea that comes in our mind through kind of shapes that can be classify the ideas. This technique helps the students in arranging their ideas. The students can generate the ideas before starting to write. Therefore, this research aims to know the effectiveness of using clustering technique towards students’ ability in writing explanation text at the eleventh grade of MA Darul Hikmah Tawangsari, Tulungagung. The formulation of the research problem is: “Is there any significant different on the students’ ability in writing explanation text before and after being taught by using clustering technique?. The purpose of this research is to find out the significant different on the students’ ability in writing explanation text before and after being taught by using clustering technique. This research used quasi-experimental research design with two groups as the subject of the research. The first group as control group and the other one as experimental group. The population of this research was eleventh grade students at MA Darul Hikmah Tawangsari, Tulungagung. The sample of this research was XI-IPA which is consisted 26 students and XI IPS which is consisted 25 students. The research finding showed that there is a significance difference between the students’ writing score before and after being taught by using clustering technique. It can be seen from the result of computation that the P-value is smaller than α (0,005) the P-value from this research was 0,000. Thus, it can be stated that the null hypothesis is rejected. As the result, Clustering Technique is effective to teach writing an explanation text at the eleventh grade of MA Darul Hikmah Tawangsari, Tulungagung.
