Abstract

Language is one of the most important aspects of human life. The use of language is to prevent miscommunication between addresser and addressee. To understand the meaning in communication that occurs with language, we need to know information based on the existing context, such as culture, time, place, who is the addresser, and who is the addressee. Language and context are two things that cannot be separated. Each speech refers to a different thing based on the addresser. Deixis is used to understand what an addresser means. Understanding the words and phrases in an utterance requires contextual information. A movie script is an appropriate object for analyzing deixis because the sentences in movie script are included spoken language. “Spongebob Squarepants” is a movie suitable for analyzing deixis because the plot of the story contains realities that occur in daily life. Therefore in this study, the researcher carries out the study entitled “Deixis in Spongebob Squarepants Movie Script”. The objectives of this study are (1) To know types of deixis found in Spongebob movie. (2) To know factors influence of using those types of deixis. In this study, the researcher used content analysis techniques. The data were form of deixis, type of deixis and factors affecting the deixis used in the movie “Spongebob Squarepants”. The data source was movie script “Spongebob Squarepants”. The results of the study show that there are 166 deixis in the “Spongebob Squarepants” movie script, consisting of 139 person deixis, 17 place deixis, 4 time deixis, 5 discourse deixis, and 1 social deixis. There are four factors that influence the use of person deixis and social deixis, namely arrogance, fear, politeness, and position factors.
