Abstract

Advisor: Dr. Erna Iftanti, SS.M.Pd Keyword : Word, Phrase and Sentence There are some underlying reasons to analyze phrases in the lyrics of Taylor Swift’s songs. By listening to music of Taylor Swift’s songs and reading the lyrics much knowledge about word, phrase, and grammar can be obtained. This research is then aimed at analyzing songs’ lyrics of Taylor Swift concerned 5 kinds of phrase these are: noun phrase, verb phrase, adjective phrase, adverb phrase and prepositional phrase. Then, the researcher choose Taylor Swift’s songs to analyze 5 kinds of phrase by selected 4 songs in her fourth album entitle “Red Album”. This topic is important to be analyzed because before learning about sentence, someone has to understand what a phrase is, and what a phrase constituents, all of these useful to be learned in order to get better understanding. Furthermore in this study, there are 4 research problems. Namely: 1)What kinds of phrases used in the lyrics of Taylor Swift’s songs? 2) What is the function of each phrase in the lyrics of Taylor Swift’s songs? 3) What is the meaning of the phrases found in Taylor Swift’s songs? The purposes of this study were to: 1) To identify the kinds of phrases find in the lyrics of Taylor Swift’s songs. 2) To find out the function of each phrase in the lyrics of Taylor Swift’s songs. 3) To know the meaning of the phrases find in lyrics of Taylor Swift’s song. The design of this research is content analysis qualitative approach, and the data of this research is 5 kinds of phrase. Meanwhile, the data source or the subject of this research is 4 songs’ lyrics of Taylor Swift selected in her fourth album entitled “Red Album”. Then, the instrument of this study was the researcher herself and the method of collecting data was documentation method. This research revealed that the result of the analysis from 4 songs’ lyrics of Taylor Swift produce much phrases found in each lyric. The result as follow: the first lyric entitled “22” found there are 25 data and in those data have 4 kinds of phrases “noun phrase, verb phrase, adjective phrase and prepositional phrase”, in second lyric entitled “Holy Ground” there are 35 data and there are 4 kinds of phrase found “NP, VP, adverb phrase and PP, in third lyric entitled “The Lucky One” there are 29 data and those data have 5 kinds of phrases “NP, VP, AdjP, AdvP and PP”, and the last lyric entitled “Starlight” there are 30 data and those data have 4 kinds of phrase “NP, VP, AdjP, and PP”. Relating to the analyzing kinds of phrase, the researcher suggests that the next researcher can use this study as a media of analysis, especially the analysis of phrases. The researcher also hopes this research to be beneficial for the students, lecturers, and readers in learning about syntax.
