Abstract

ABSTRACT Sandini, Ari. Student Registered Number. 12203173153. 2021. A Deixis Analysis of “To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You” Movie Script by Sofia Alvarez and J. Mills Goodloe. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic Institute of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Hj. Ida Isnawati, M.Pd. Keywords: Deixis, Main Character, Movie Script Language plays an important role as the media of expression of thoughts and ideas. However, in the practice, miscommunication could occur when the thoughts or ideas are expressed ambiguously. This is why context also plays important role in human communication. Language and context are two things that cannot be separated from each other. The context in communication helps the hearer or the addressee to be able to understand the speaker’s meaning. One of the pragmatics studies that include the context in it is deixis. Deixis shows that in order to be interpreted correctly, the speaker and hearer or addressee have to share the same understanding of a certain context. Deixis appears in human’s daily communication, spoken and written media without our realization. Movie script can be one of the appropriate objects to analyze deixis, it is because the conversations contained in the movie script belong to spoken language. The formulation of the research problem was: 1) What are the types of deixis found in the “To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You” movie script? 2) What are the functions of deixis found in the “To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You” movie script? The researcher uses qualitative method and content analysis to analyze the types of deixis taken from a movie script, then classifies them according to Yule’s theory and Levinson’s theory of deixis types. The script is downloaded from the internet. The technique of collecting data is; watching the movie several times to get throughout the whole story, finding the script of the movie from the internet, comparing and syncing the script with the movie, underlining the utterance which contains deixis expression, identifying the listed utterance, identifying each data based on the types of deixis. The result of the research shows that the main character used all types of deixis in her utterances. The person deixis which has the function to show the role of the participants is dominantly used in her dialogue. It could be divided into first person (I, me, mine, myself, we, us), second person (you and yours), and third person (she, he, her, him, they, and them). The following is discourse deixis which can be marked by the demonstrative words (this and that), it has the function to encode the reference of unfolding discourse in which the utterance is located. Next, temporal deixis in the main character’s utterance which has the function to indicate the role of time referent is marked by adverbial of time, such as, now, tomorrow, long time ago; and tense marker (past, present, and future). Then spatial deixis which is marked by adverbial places, such as, here and there, has the function to show the role of the place and distance of the object being talked about when the speech event occurs. Lastly, there is social deixis in the main character’s utterance can be divided into absolute (miss, Mrs. Rothschild) and relational (Mom and Dad), it has the function to distinct the social characteristics of the participants in the speech event.
