Abstract
ABSTRACT Fauziyah, Wulidatil. 2021. Act of Apology among the English Students of IAIN TULUNGAGUNG. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training (FTIK). State Islamic Institute of Religion, TULUNGAGUNG. The Advisor I: Dr. Sukarsono, M.Pd. II: Dr. Nurul Chojimah, M.Pd Keywords: Apology Strategy, Communicative Competence, Grammatical Realization, L1 Interference, Pragmatic Failure Apologizing is a communicative event that is used by people to improve a relationship. Apology can be identified as the language used by people to admit mistakes or misunderstandings that have occurred between them. The purpose of this study was to determine the kinds of Apology Strategies used by English students of IAIN TULUNGAGUNG and how the used a sentences in asking apology. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. For analyzing the data, researcher use strategy from Moelong (2004) about some steps in analyzing the data, there are: identifying, grouping and coding, analyzing, drawing the result based on the theory, and concluding. The theory used in this research is from Anna Trosborg's (1995) theory of apology strategy and Halliday's (2004) sentence-type selection strategy. The results of this study indicate that the types of sentences used by English student of IAIN TULUNGAGUNG are: descriptive, imperative, interrogative, and exclamative. While the apology strategies used by the English Language Students of IAIN TULUNGAGUNG are: minimizing offense (Minimizing, query preconditions, and blaming others); Direct apology (Expressing regret, offer of apology, and Request for forgiveness); indirect apology (explicit acknowledgment, expression of lack of intent, expression of self-deficiency, expression of embarrassment, and explicit acceptance of a blame); explanation (explicit explanation); offer of repair (Repair and compensation); expressing concern to the hearer; Rejection (implicit denial of responsibility, explicit denial of responsibility, and justification) and; promise of forbearance. Whereas, the strategy that did not found is implicit acknowledgment from indirect apology and implicit explanation from Explanation strategy.
