Abstract
Movies are one of the most popular media for people of all ages. Aspects in a film can be used as a reference for entertainment, information, and even education. This reference means that the values contained in a film have the possibility to be applied in the real world. The film titled "Coach Carter" directed by Thomas Carter is an example of a film that contains educational aspects. This film shows a portrait of a teacher's struggle to improve the academic and sports achievements of his students. The formulation of the problem is to reveal the struggle that the main character, Ken Carter, goes through to improve the academic and sports achievements of students in the film "Coach Carter". Naturally, the purpose of this study is to describe the struggle of the main character in improving the academic and sports achievements of students in the film "Coach Carter". The author uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The data collection method involves documentation. The primary data of this research are gestures and dialogues that show the form of struggle in the film Coach Carter. While the secondary data collected from books, theses, and websites contain the necessary theories from both Alfred Adler's individual psychology and films. According to the findings of this study, there are five types of struggles that support the main characters in achieving his goals, namely improving students' academic and sports achievements, and among them are subjective perception, self-consistency, social interest, style of life, and creative power, which are based on individual personality theory proposed by Alfred Adler (1964).
