Thesis, English Department State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung Advisors: Dr. Susanto, SS, M.Pd Keywords: Figurative Language, Christina Perri’s lyrics Some literatures use figurative language to make it more interesting and more beautiful, as it is used in a song’s lyric.Figurative language is not intended to be interpreted in a literal sense. Appealing to the imagination, figurative language provides new ways of looking at the new world. It always makes the use of a comparison between different things. The formulation of the research problems were: (1) What are the kinds of figurative language found in Christina Perri’s lyrics of song?; (2) What are the meaning of songs using figurative language found in Christina Perri’s lyrics of song?; (3)What are the messages of the song conveyed from the figurative language found in Christina Perri’s lyrics of song?. The purpose of this study were: (1) To find out the kinds of figurative language found in Christina Perri’s lyrics of song, 2) To identify the meaning of songs using figurative language found in Christina Perri’s lyrics of song, 3) To know the messages of the song conveyed from the figurative language found in Christina Perri’s lyrics of song. The research design used in this study was descriptive with qualitative approach. The study also belonged to library research. The objects of this study were Christina Perri’s lyrics of songs. The procedures of collecting data were: browsing Christina Perri’s song, collecting Christina Perri’s song, selecting Christina Perri’s song, reading and understanding the lyric, identifying out all the words, phrase and sentence containing figurative language as the data, and then noting down the data classifying them. Meanwhile, the data were analyzed through the following steps: listening to the song, reading the whole song lyric, interpreting song lyrics, finding the figurative language, classifying kinds of figurative language, meaning, and message, and then making conclusion. The findings of the research revealed: (1) There were 9 kinds of figurative language in Christina Perri’s lyrics of song, they were: hyperbole, rhetoric, personification, repetition, paradox, allegory, irony, parallelism, and litotes. (2) The meaning of songs using figurative language found in Christina Perri’s lyrics of song were: (a) someone who has great of love, (b) someone who is hurt by her boyfriend, (c) someone who has a power to live although she feels alone, (d) someone who is lied by her boyfriend, (e) someone who is possessive toward her boyfriend, (f) someone who get along a boy of her ex-boyfriend, (g) someone who has one side love, (h) someone who dreams to love a boyfriend, (i) a couple who are shy to express their love, (j) someone who is always faithful to her boyfriend. (3) Message of songs using figurative language found in Christina Perri’s lyrics of song were: (a) love is a precious thing it, needs a proof to make love becomestrue, (b) being left by lover is very painful, needs a loyalty in love, (c) someone must be brave to keep the love, everywhere and anywhere, (d) there is personal penalty (karma) in social live, someone who breaks the rule he/she will get the karma, (e) being possessive is not good in building up relationship, it needs to comprehend each other to preserve love, (f) true friend is someone who can be believed, not someone who hits from behind, (g) keeping the secret is the best way to preserve relation, (h) everybody can dream what he/she wants and a good dream is expected by everyone, (i) misunderstanding will happen when no words are out from the couple should be open each other, (j) love is faithful, everything can be done for someone who they love.
