Keywords: WhatsApp Group, Learning Media, English Learning During this pandemic Covid-19, the learning system in Indonesia has changed from offline into online learning. Many schools use various learning media to conduct the teaching and learning activity during the online class. This research focuses on the school that uses only one kind of learning media that is WhatsApp group. In this research, the researcher would analyze the use of WhatsApp group as learning media in English learning at 8th grade of MTs Jawahirul Ulum Jabon, Sidoarjo in academic year 2020/2021. There were two statement of research questions in this research. The first research question was how does the teacher promote students’ participation through the use of WhatsApp group as learning media in English learning during pandemic Covid-19. The second was how is the use of WhatsApp group as learning media in English learning during pandemic Covid-19 contributive to students’ learning. This research belonged to field research. The method used in this research was the qualitative descriptive method. The object of this research was the English teacher and the 8th grade students. of MTs Jawahirul Ulum. The data of this research were obtained by interviewing the English teacher and the students. The procedure of data analysis was: 1) Collecting the data, 2) Data reduction, 3) Interpreting the data, and 4) Conclusion drawing. Based on the data analysis, the researcher found that to promote students’ participation through the use of WhatsApp group in English learning during pandemic Covid-19, the teacher took two efforts. The first effort was dealing with media (making a new group, making a group discussion, and creating an English club) and the second effort was dealing with non-media (giving a reward and doing personal approach). The researcher also found the contributions of WhatsApp group as learning media in English learning during pandemic Covid-19 in two perspectives. The first perspective was dealing with the practicality in using WhatsApp group (easy to use, easy to carry everywhere, and saving time and cost) and the second perspective was dealing with the contribution how the students could learn better from the use of WhatsApp group (students can do the assignment easily, students can get the feedback easily, and students can ask for clarification easily).
