Abstract

Speaking is one respect from the productive skill that must be mastered by the students, because speaking is an interactive process of constructing meaning that concerns producing, receiving and processing information. Learners should know the components of speaking therefore they can speak correctly and fluently. Those components consist of vocabulary, pronounciation and grammar. Self-confident is a personal factor that pays a supportive role in the achievement of foreign language learning. Some studies claim that no language learning activities will be carried out successfully without it. The formulation of the research problem is whether there is a correlation between self-confidence and English speaking ability of class VIII students at SMP Muallimin Wonodadi . The aim of this research is to determine whether there is or not Is there a correlation between students' self-confidence and students' English speaking abilities from class VIII students of Muallimin Wonodadi Middle School. The subject of this research is there are 25 students in class VIII at SMP Muallimin Wonodadi 15 men and 10 women. This research is carried out systematically by giving speaking tests and self-confidence questionnaires. The questionnaires were assessed by Likerts scale rating and oral test by brown and harris. The method used in this research was a quantitative method and the technique used in this research was a correlation technique. The results of this study show that the coefficient correlation is higher than value of r-table (0,506 > 0,396) and it means that the correlation belongs to medium correlation. Overall, from the data calculation it can be concluded there is a significant correlation between self-confidence and students' English speaking ability of eight grade at Muallimin Middle School.
