Keywords: students’ awareness, learning styles, VAK learning style, learning strategies, learning speaking Learning style refers to an individual’s preferred and habitual approach to acquiring, processing, and retaining new information. Learning styles have been categorized into various models, including VAK (Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic). VAK learners use three main sensory receivers to find out the dominant or preferred learning style of an individual. The VAK model categorizes learners into three primary types, visual (prefer using images, diagrams, and spatial understanding), auditory (learn best through listening to lectures and discussions), kinesthetic (prefer hands-on experiences and real-life examples). The concept of preferred learning strategies encompasses the specific techniques and activities students choose to employ based on their learning styles. Previous studies primarily examine how educators can adapt their teaching methods to accommodate different learning preferences. However, there is a lack of research exploring students’ own awareness of their learning styles and how learning styles’ preferences influence the choice of their learning strategies in learning speaking. In this study, the researcher investigated the extent to which students are aware of their learning styles, and whether that awareness affects the strategies they choose in learning speaking. This research used descriptive qualitative research. By using questionnaire, the researcher obtained the data from 30 students of B class in the 8th semester, English Education Department. The findings show that most EFL students in this study are aware of how they learn best for speaking practice. Visual learners tend to choose tools like videos with subtitles or charts because they help them understand and remember words better. Auditory learners often pick strategies like listening to English songs, which they say improves their pronunciation. Kinesthetic learners usually pick group games or role-playing, as moving around makes them feel more comfortable speaking. To conclude, students in class 8B are aware of their learning styles and show preferences that align with those styles. However, they still need guidance to use these strategies more independently. The researcher suggested that: the teachers should provide more varied activities in speaking classes that address different learning styles; students must reflect more on their own preferences and practice using strategies outside the classroom; and future researchers could use interviews or observations to explore deeper insights.
