Abstract

ABSTRACT Nafi’ah,Khoirun. Students Registerd Number 1723143091. 2018. Grammatical Error in English Paragraph Writing Written by First Semester Students of IAIN Tulungagung in Academic Year 2017-2018. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisors: Nany Soengkono Madayani, SS. Key words: Grammatical Error, Writing, Paragraph Writing Grammar is the most important aspects in writing. In order to make a well structured writing, one should be mastered in grammar. From the phenomena, some students may get difficulties in constructing sentences with in relation to this the writer will conduct a study on correct grammar. Error in grammatical since it can be used to give some contribution in attempting to decrease errors made by the first semester students in writing. The problems statements of this reasearh were, what types of grammatical error do occur in English paragraph writing written by first semester students of IAIN Tulungagung? and What are the factors that cause of grammatical error in English paragraph writing written by first semester students of IAIN Tulungagung?. But, in the other hand the objective of this research were To find the types of grammatical error in English paragraph writing written by first semester students of IAIN Tulungagung and To know the factors that cause of grammatical error in English paragraph writing written by first semester students of IAIN Tulungagung. This research is descriptive design with quantitative approach. The population of this research was all the first semester students (TBI E) of IAIN Tulungagung in academic year 2017/2018. The sample of this research was TBI-E class which consists of 31 students. The instrument used in this research was writing test. The data analysis was using the procedure of error analysis which adopted by the writer into identify, classification, tabulation, and possible cause of error. In term of each error morphological error includes subject-verb agreement (37,2%) error, singular-plural agreement (20.2%), to-infinitive (7,4%), clause (6,4%), from of adjective (2,2%) and passive-voice from the students’ English paragraph writing text, in syntax error includes redudancy (9,6%), parallel structure (3,1%), missplaced word (6,4%) and pronoun-antencendent agreement (5,3%). Based on the finding of the research, it is suggested that English teacher should pay attention to the grammatical errors that often made by students in composing writing. After knowing the students’ errors, the teacher have to give explanation and feedback for their students related to the errors. This research is concern only analyzing grammatical error in students’ paragraph writing text. So, other researchers are suggested to analyze other aspects in writing composition.
