English Education Thesis. English Education Department.Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. H. Nursamsu, M.Pd. Keywords: Effectiveness, Mnemonic Method, Vocabulary Vocabulary plays an essensial role in the learning foreign language. To comprehend the content of the text both written text and oral text is needed to know the meaning of vocabulary first. If the students do not know the meaning of the words, it is impossible they can express their ideas or thoughts. And if the students lacks of vocabulary, their ability to communicate and convey message could not be done The key of mastering the vocabulary is by memorizing. The use of Mnemonic Method in the teaching vocabulary is expected can make the students easier to memorize the strange words that influence their vocabulary mastery increased. This study attempted to answer the research question : Are there significant differences on the student’s vocabulary mastery before and after being taught by using mnemonic method? In carrying this research, the researcher formulated the objective of the study, that was: To identify the significant differences on the student’s vocabulary mastery before and after being taught by using mnemonic method. Research method: 1) The research design of this study was pre experimental design with quantitative approach, 2) The population of this study was the second grade students of MTsN 4 Tulungagung, 3) The samples was second D class consisting of 39 students, 4) The research instrument was test, 5) The data analysis was using Paired Sample Test at SPSS 20.0. The result showed that different of mean score of students’ vocabulary before being taught using Mnemonic Method was 70,77. Meanwhile, the mean score of students’ vocabulary after being taught using Mnemonic Method was 86,05. The result of Paired Sample Test at SPSS 20.0 showed that numeral of significant value 0.000 < than significant level 0.05. The result of calculation indicated that Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected. The finding showed that the Mnemonic Method was effective used in teaching vocabulary for it could upgrade the students’ English Vocabulary mastery.
