Abstract
ABSTRACK Soliha, Oktavia. Student Registered Number, 1723143141. 2018. A Comparative Study on the Effectiveness of Using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) and Roundtable Techniques Towards Students’ Ability in Writing Descriptive Text of Seventh Grade At SMPN 3 Kedungwaru. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Susanto, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: Numbered Heads Together (NHT) Technique, Roundtable Technique, writing ability Writing is an activity of expressing idea in written form. Writing becomes one of the most difficult skills in English because it requires some aspects to be mastered. The use of Numbered Heads Together (NHT) and Roundtable Techniques could create a condition that help the students write with high motivation. In these techniques, the students are divided into some groups consisted of 4 until 5 students. Every student has his or her own responsibility in writing but he or she also works together in group. The formulations of the research problems were: 1) How is the students’ ability in writing descriptive text taught by using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) Technique? 2) How is the students’ ability in writing descriptive text taught by using Roundtable Technique? 3) Is there any significance differences of the ability in writing descriptive text of students taught by using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) Technique and those taught by using Roundtable Technique? 4) Which one is more effective to improve the students’ ability in writing descriptive text of the seventh grade students taught by using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) Technique or by using Roundtable Technique? Research method: 1) the research design of this study was comparative study using Quasai-experimental design with quantitative approach, 2) the population of this study was the seventh grade students of SMPN 3 Kedungwaru, 3) the samples were VIID class consisted of 32 students and VIIE class consisted of 31 students, 4) the research instrument was test, 5) the data analysis was using T-test. The result showed that the students’ mean value taught by using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) Technique was 82 while the students’ mean value taught by using Roundtable Technique was 77. The T-count was 2.208, whereas T-table with significant level 5% was 2.003. So, T-count was greater than T-table. It means that Ha which states that there is significant different score in students’ writing ability in descriptive text taught by using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) Technique and Roundtable Technique is accepted. Whereas, Ho which states there is no significant different score in students’ writing ability in descriptive text taught by using and Roundtable Technique is rejected. While, the mean value of Numbered Heads Together (NHT) Technique (82) is higher than the mean value of Roundtable Technique (77). This means that Numbered Heads Together (NHT) Technique was more effective to improve the students’ ability in writing descriptive text than Roundtable Technique. In other words, Numbered Heads Together (NHT) Technique can be used as an alternative technique to teach writing in descriptive text to the students at SMP level because it can create a comfortable condition that make the students easy in writing.
