Keywords: Short story, Frequency, Corpus, adjective Short story is concise form of prose fiction. Due to the restrictions of length, short story needs to be highly selective in plot. It usually focuses on one central moment of action and the action often commences close to the climax. Short story always focus on one main figure of location, the setting and the character generally receive less detailed. From this point of view, child short story needs to use adjective to deliver an idea and meaningful short story to the reader. By using the adjective appropriately, it will help the child short story to describe the characteristic of a noun. Based on that phenomenon, the researcher is interested to find out the most frequently used adjective in the children short story for middle school students. The question that formulated by the researcher is “What are the most frequently used adjective in the short stories for middle school students?” The purpose of the study is to know the most frequently used adjective in the short stories for middle school students. Research Method: 1) the research design in this study was corpus based study. 2) The data being analyzed was corpus of children short story which collected and downloaded from several website such as: americanliterature.com, www.rethinkela.com, www.weareteachers.com. 3) the data analysis was conducted by using corpus-specialized freeware, AntConc and TagAnt, in generate wordlist and frequency. Then, the results of the adjectives were categorized according to Thomson and Martinet (1986) classification and also Khamying in Jitpranee (2017) classification. After conducted an analysis, the researcher found the result of this study. The result revealed adjectives that mostly used is adjective of general description and adjective of personality/emotion as the second. Adjective of general description was mostly used in children short story to describe the noun clearly. While adjective of personality/emotion was used to describe the personality or the feature of the character. The conclusion of this study shows that the most adjective found from the data is adjective of general description. This adjective was used to describe the feature and characteristic of noun. Through the clearly description about noun, it will support the events in developing the plot. Thus, it can be used by the students to improve their knowledge in describing the noun such as people, animals, things, and places.
