Abstract
ABSTRACT Farid, Nurul Laila. Student Registered Number, 1723143137. 2018. The Practice of English Community to Facilitate the Students at MAN 2 Tulungagung. Thesis. English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Susanto, M.Pd. Keywords: English community, English OTC activities, contribution of English OTC, Speaking Improvement Olympiad Training Centre (OTC) is an English community which was found in MAN 2 Tulungagung for the purpose to facilitate the students to improve their speaking skill. This community facilitated many kind of activities. Practically, this community through its programs offered positive results toward the students’ speaking ability. The formulation of the research problems were; 1) What kind of activities are carried out to facilitate the students’ speaking ability? 2) How are the contribution of English community activities to the students’ speaking ability? The purposes of this study were to; 1) investigate the activities of English community in practicing English speaking 2) elaborate the contribution of the activities in the English community toward to the students’ speaking ability. Research method; 1) the research design in this study was descriptive design with qualitative approach, 2) the subjects of this study were English teacher and the students who have joined English OTC, 3) method of collecting data were interview and documentation, 4) data analysis covered data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, 5) data trustworthiness checking of this research was triangulation by data source and triangulation by method. The result showed that the activities of English OTC were speech, debate, story telling, drilling and reading aloud. Meanwhile, the set of activities gave contribution to the students’ speaking ability on some aspects. Those are; to build up the students’ self confidence, increase of grammar mastery, improve of vocabularies mastery, increase of pronunciation ability, increase of fluency, and help the students to organize ideas fast and clearly.
