Abstract

English Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. H. Nursamsu, M.Pd. Keyword: Effectiveness, Short Movie, Argumentative, Speaking. Argumentative is important because students must be active to deliver their argument, their feeling and their willing, to the teacher know their understanding.Speakingis people’s skill to product the sound useful to communication or interaction with other people such as asking question, giving opinion, asking help, giving information and many other to make a people become social creature. This study was carried out to know the effectiveness of short movie toward students’ argumentative speaking skill at MAN 1 Trenggalek. Using short movie as media is increase students’ motivation and students’ attention because in short movie a lot of color and sound and story, beside that the duration is not to long it cannot be boring. The formulation of being the problem:Do the students of MAN 1 Trenggalek have better score after taught by short movie as media of teaching and learning process? Based on the formulation purpose of this study was to measure the effectiveness of short movie for student’s argumentative speaking skill. This study used quantitative approach with quasi-experimental design. The population of the research is all the students of second grade in MAN 1 Trenggalek. The sample of this research is Class XI MIA 2 as experimental class and XI MIA 3 as control class each of them consist of 31 and 32 students. Meanwhile, the instrument is test which is used to conduct pre-test and post-test in control class and experimental class. The data collected through pre-test and posttest were analyzed by using Independent Sample T-test with SPSS windows 16.0. This study reveals that there are three important points: 1). The student score of speaking achievement in experimental class the mean of 31 students increase frompre-test the mean score is49.7742 become 50.7742in post-test after taught being short movie as media. It means that their score also increase. 2). The student score of control class the mean of 32 students decrease from pre-test mean score is 45.2188 become 44.9062in post-test mean score. 3). Based on the result of independent T-test by using SPSS 16.00, it showed that the significant value is 0.001. It means that the significant value is smaller than significant level (0.001< 0.005). It is indicate that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, So the conclusion is short movie is effective for teaching speaking, especially in argumentative speaking.
