Advisor: Dr. Sukarsono, M.Pd Keywords: Effectiveness, Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text, Reading Comprehension Reading is the process of getting meaning and information from the text through writer’s prior knowledge. This skill has to be mastered by the students in Senior High School. The type of reading text which must be learned by the students at the second grade is hortatory exposition text. One of the problems when the students reading hortatory exposition text is find the main idea and lack of vocabulary. Improving the students’ reading comprehension, the teacher should choose the appropriate strategy of teaching to help the students learn it. Therefore, in this research, the researcher tries to apply the strategy which might solve the students’ problems, namely Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text (GIST) strategy. In Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text, the students are required to find out the important vocabulary and information. Then, make a summary. Summarizing leads students to focus on the main ideas of the text and to decide what is important without omitting the key ideas. The formulation of the research problem ”Is there any significant difference score of the students’ reading comprehension before and after being taught by using Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text (GIST) strategy?” The objectives of the research is intended to know whether there is any significant different scores of the students’ reading comprehension before and after being taught by using Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text (GIST) strategy Research method that applied in this research included: 1) The research design in this research was used pre-experimental design with quantitative approach in the form of one group pre-test and post-test. 2) The population of this research was all of second grade students’ MAN 1 Tulungagung which consist of twelve classes and the total students is 368. 3) The sample of this research was XI MIA U2 as experimental group which consist of 30 students. One group pre-test and post-test. 4) The variable were independent and dependent variable. Independent variable was GIST strategy and dependent variable was students’reading comprehension on hortatory exposition text. 5) The research instrument was test. 6) The data analysis was using Paired Sample T-test with SPSS 18.0 The result showed that the students’ mean score before being taught by using GIST strategy was 16.67 and the students’ mean score after being taught by using GIST strategy was 21.43. In addition, the result of statistical calculation used Paired Sample T-test with SPSS 18.0, showed the significant value is 0.000. It means that the significant value is smaller than significant level (0.000 < 0.05). The result of significant value indicates that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. So, it can be said there was significant different of using GIST strategy on students’ reading comprehension at the second grade of MAN 1 Tulungagung. It can be concluded that GIST strategy was effective used in teaching reading hortatory exposition text.
