Abstract

ABSTRACT Sholikah, Fi’liyatus (1723143056). The Effectiveness of Time Token Arend Strategy on Students’ Speaking ability at eleventh grade of MA Ma’arif NU Blitar. Thesis of English Education Departement at Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher’s Training State Islamic Insitute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor : Muh. Basuni, M.Pd. Keyword : Cooperative learning, Time Token Arend , speaking ability Speaking is one of the most important skills that should be mastered by students, because speaking is one of indicators to determine wether the students master English well or not. Through speaking the students can communicate and interact with others and they can also share their idea, thought, feeling, and opinion about something through speaking. There are many strategies that can be applied for teaching speaking. Time Token Arend is one of the strategies. Time Token Arend strategy can increase students participation and activeness in learning process. In this strategy students are divided into several groups. Then, All students get coupon to speak with a certain time limit, so each student will get same opportunity to speak. The formulation research in this study is : Is there any significant difference on students’speaking ability between those taught by using Time Token Arend Strategy and those taught without using Time Token Arend Strategy? Research method used in this study was quantitative method. This study used quasi-experimental with non-randomized control group, pretest-posttest design because the researccher could not randomly put the subject. The population of this study is all students of eleventh grade students of MA Ma’arif NU Blitar that consist of 177 students and the samples are XI G class which consist of 32 students as experimental group and XI F class which consist of 17 students as control group. The research instrument of this study is a test. The researcher computed independent sample test to analyze the data by using SPSS 16.0 version. The result showed that the mean score of experimental group after being taught by using Time Tokan Arend Strategy was 71.50 while the mean score of control group after being thaught without using Time Token Arend Strategy was 63.06. It showed that the mean of students’ score in experimental group was higher than the mean of students’ score in control group. Beside that, the result of t-test calculation showed that Sig (2- tailed) value was 0.001 which was less than 0.05. It means that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. Indicated that there is significant difference score on students’speaking ability between those taught by using Time Token Arend Strategy and those taught without using Time Token x Arend Strategy. In other word, Time Token Arend Strategy is effective to use in teaching speaking at eleventh grade of MA Ma’arif NU Blitar
