ABSTRACT Amin, Sausan Nafis. Student Registered Number. 17203153093. 2019. The Effectiveness of Duolingo On Students’ Vocabulary Mastery at The Seventh Grade of MTsN 3 Tulungagung. Thesis. English Education Program. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor. Dr. Sukarsono. M.Pd. Key Word: Effectiveness, Vocabulary, and Duolingo Application. Vocabulary is a list of a word in a particular language. Vocabulary, as one of the language components, it is an important component for students to be learned since it builds up communication. The objective of this research is to find out the effectiveness Duolingo application for improving vocabulary ability in the seventh grade of MTsN 3 Tulungagung. The design of this research was pre experimental research which belongs to the quantitative method. The population is all of the students from A until F class which consist of 125 students, and each class consists of 25 students. For the sample is A class that consists of 25 students selected by purposive sampling. Then, the instrument in this research vocabulary test is consisted of twenty-five question in the form by multiple choice, specify the noun and match the picture with the correct vocabulary. To compare the result of pre-test and post-test used Paired sample t-test in SPSS 16.0. The formulation of the research problem: Is there any significant difference between students’ vocabulary mastery before and after being taught by Duolingo application?. The objective of the research is to identify the significant difference between students’ vocabulary mastery before and after being taught by Duolingo application. The researcher determines this study as quantitative in the form of pre experimental design that involves one only group pre-test and post-test. The population is all of the students from A until F class which consist of 125 students, and each class consists of 25 students. For the sample is A class that consists of 25 students selected by purposive sampling. Then, the instrument in this research vocabulary test is consisted twenty-five question in the form by multiple choice, specify the nouns and match the picture with the correct vocabulary. To compare the result of pre-test and post-test used Paired sample t test in SPSS 16.0. Whether effective or not. The result shows the mean score of post-test it could be seen that the mean of the post-test score (72.80) was larger, that the mean of pre-test score (57.20). It means that the use of Duolingo application has caused in improving students vocabulary. While N for each other is 25. Meanwhile, the standard deviation of the pre-test is 13.6 and standard deviation of post-test is 11.7. The way to test the null hypothesis can be rejected or not was by comparing p-value with the standard level of significance, 0.05. The p-value was less than 0.05 (0.000<0.05). It means that the null hypothesis could be rejected and it could be concluded that the use of Duolingo application was effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery.
