Student Registered Number. 17203153132. ‘’The Effect of Using Smart (Self-Monitoring Approach to Reading And Thinking) Strategy on Student’s Reading Comprehension Achievement at The First Grade of Mts Ma’arif Bakung Udanawu Blitar in The Academic Year 2018/2019.’’ Sarjana thesis. Keywords : Effectiveness, Smart( self-monitoring approach to reading and thinking), reading comprehension There are many problem found in teaching English for junior high school level of MTs Ma’arif bakung udanawu Blitar. Especially, in teaching reading comprehension really needed solution. In this case, the teacher was expected to find a good strategy to improve the students' ability in reading comprehension by applying self-monitoring approach to reading and thinking (SMART) strategy as a replacement of previous strategy. Reading is considered as an important aspect for students because of its valuable benefit in developing knowledge. There are many strategies which is can used by the teacher to help the students mastering the reading comprehension. Such as SMART (self-monitoring approach to reading and thinking) strategy. The purpose to know ‘’ is there any significant difference achievement on students reading comprehension before and after being taught by using SMART (self-monitoring approach to reading and thinking) strategy at the first grade of MTs Ma’arif Bakung Udanawu Blitar? Subject of this study is the first grade students at MTs Ma’arif Bakung Udanawu Blitar in academic year 2019. The researcher chooses VII F class which consist 40 students based on the result of pleminary observation over there. This research was used quantitative approach with pre-experimental research design with on group pretest and posttest. It is intended to find out any significant difference on students reading achievement before and after taught using SMART strategy. The data of this research is students score in pre-test and post-test, and to analisys that data the researcher using spss 24.0 for window program. The result of study showed that the mean of students score of pre-test before they are taught being using SMART strategy to increse reading comprehension was (56,13) while the mean of students score after taught being using SMART strategy was (77,25). The significance value is 0.00 and the significance level is 0.05. It means that the significance value is smaller than significance level (0.00 < 0.05). So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. The alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected which states that there was any significant different in using SMART strategy to increase reading comprehension at the first grade of Mts Ma’arif Bakung Udanawu Blitar is rejected. In other word SMART strategy to increase reading comprehension can be used as an alternative strategy to icrease students reading comprehension at junior high school, especially for VII grade.
