This research is about the effectiveness of write around technique on students’ achievement in writing descriptive text at first grade of SMPN 6 Kediri in academic year 2018/2019. The writer interested to do this research because the writer knew the fact that still there are a lot of students who felt difficult in write descriptive text with variance difficulties, majority those difficulties are about vocabulary mastery, organizing ideas into a descriptive text and arranged sentences in simple present tense. It means English teachers have to look for some techniques or strategies to solve those problems. In writer opinion, there was one of the techniques of cooperative learning that suitable to solve those problems. The name of that technique is write around technique. This technique not only improved students’ ability in writing but also improved their collaboration skill. That is why the writer believed that this technique is able to solve those problems with enjoyable atmosphere. Next, the research problem of this research was is it effective to use write around technique on students’ achievement in writing descriptive text at the first grade of SMPN 6 Kediri in academic year 2018/2019? From that research problem, we were able to say the objective of this research was to know the effectiveness of write around technique on students’ achievement in writing descriptive text at first grade of SMPN 6 Kediri in the academic year 2018/2019. In this research, the writer used quasi-experimental research design. The population of this research was all students of first grade at SMPN 6 Kediri in academic year 2018/2019. The total quantities were 256 students. In selecting the sample, the writer used purposive sampling technique. Further, the sample in this research was VII C class consists of 32 students and VII E class consists of 32 students. In this research, the writer just used 27 students each class because those were the available students in the class. It caused some students in each class followed sport national competition and some students got sick. Next, the research instrument of this research was writing test in pre-test and post-test. The technique of data analysis that used in this research was Independent Sample Test in software SPSS 16.0 for windows. The result of this research showed that the mean of gain score (the result of detracting between posttest and pretest) in experiment class was 6.11 and mean of gain score (the result of detracting between posttest and pretest) in control class was 3.33. Then, sig. (2 tailed) was 0.003 smaller than sig level 0.050 (0.003 < 0.050). Therefore, the null hypotesis (Ho) saying that there is no effectiveness of Write Around Technique on students’ achievement in writing descriptive text at first grade of SMPN 6 Kediri in the academic year 2018/2019 was rejected and alternative hypotesis (Ha) saying that there is effectiveness of Write Around Technique on students’ achievement in writing descriptive text at first grade of SMPN 6 Kediri in the academic year 2018/2019 was accepted. So, it can be concluded that Write-Around Technique effective to use in teaching writing descriptive text of first grade at SMPN 6 Kediri in the academic year 2018/2019.
