Abstract
Keywords: effectiveness, authentic material, reading comprehension Reading which is one of the language skills and considered as a passive skill is essential to be mastered by the students since it plays significant role in language acquisition such as in learning language components such as grammar and vocabulary. In addition, reading can enhance student’s knowledge about many information such as economy, social, culture, etc. The reading skill can be improved by selecting interesting reading materials such as from authentic materials because authentic materials contain text that close to real life and very contextual. The formulation of the research problems were: 1) How are the students’ pre-test and post-test scores in reading comprehension in the experimental group? 2) How are the student’s pre-test and post-test scores in reading comprehension in control group? 3) Is there significant difference between the students’ achievement taught by using authentic material and without using authentic material? The purposes of this study were to: 1) find out the students’ pre-test and post-test scores in reading comprehension in the experimental group. 2) find out the students’ pre-test and post-test scores in reading comprehension in control group 3) find out if there is significant difference between the students’ achievement who are taught by using authentic material and who are taught without using authentic material Research Method: 1) the research design in this study was experimental design,2) the population of this study was all students of first year at SMAN 1 Durenan Trenggalek , 3)the sample was X C and X D class consisting of 74 students and using random sampling, 4) the research instrument was test, 5) the data analysis was using T test. According to the result of data analysis, the pre-test score in reading comprehension of the students in experimental group were 2688 and the mean was 72,648. Meanwhile the post-test score of the students in experimental group were 2904 with the mean 78,486. The pre-test score of the students in control group were 2678 with the mean 72,378 and post-test score of control group were 2958 with the mean 79, 94. Based on the result of computation the data using t-test it could be concluded that the t count were 0,804. Meanwhile, the t table with degree of freedom 72 and in significant level 5% were 2,00. If the value of t count and t table were compared, the t count 0,804 was less than the t table 2,00. Therefore, the Ho (null hypothesis) that stated there is no significant difference score between the students who are taught by using authentic materials and who are taught without using authentic material was accepted. In the other hand, the Ha (alternative hypothesis) that states there is significant difference score between the students who are taught by using authentic material and who are taught without using authentic material was rejected. In other words, the use of authentic material in improving reading comprehension achievement of the first grade students of SMAN1 Durenan was not effective.
