Abstract
Keywords: derivational words and argumentative texts Language is a system that consists of some elements that can be combining by following certain roles. One of language elements is word. Morphology is a linguistics that studies of word form. The smallest element of word that has semantic meaning is morpheme. Morpheme is divided into free morpheme and bound morpheme. Bound morpheme is morphemes that can appear only together with other morphemes to form a word and in general tend to be affix. Affix may be inflectional or derivational. Derivational affixes that commonly are called derivational words are one word is formed (derived) from another may change the word-class and/or meaning. The formulations of the research problems were: 1) What are the types and the patterns of derivational words used in argumentative text in “The New York Times”? and 2) How are the frequencies of occurrence of types and patterns of derivational words used in argumentative text in “The New York Times”? The purposes of this study were to: 1) find out the types and the patterns of derivational words used in argumentative texts in “The New York Times” and 2) find out the frequency of occurrence of types and patterns of derivational words used in argumentative texts in “The New York Times”. Research Method: 1) the research design was descriptive design with quantitative approach, 2) the population was all of the derivational words used in argumentative texts in “The New York Times” on January - December, 2010, 3) the sample was twelve argumentative texts used in “The New York Times” on January-December , 2010, 4) the method of collecting data was library study, 5) the data analysis was by observing and identifying directly the argumentative texts included in the sample. From the result, there are nine hundred sixty-eight (968) times of occurrences of patterns of derivational words that could be founded that are divided into class-changing and class-maintaining. There are eight hundred twenty-eight (872/ 90,08%) patterns of derivational words in class-changing and ninety-six (96/ 9,92%) patterns of derivational words in class-maintaining. Having known the result of this research, there are some suggestions, they are; the students should read text books or other texts more to improve their knowledge especially in reading skills, the teacher not only uses book but also other medias in teaching learning process for example using news paper , and for future researchers, they should find out other types of pattern of derivational words not only in news paper but also in other resources.
