The Effectiveness of Using Diary toward Students’ Achievement in Writing Recount Text At the Tenth Grade of SMAN 1 Pakel Tulunggung . Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. H. Nursamsu, S.Pd.I., M.Pd. Keywords: Effectiveness, Diary, Writing Recount Text. In the context of teaching English, writing is one of productive skills that must be learn. Writing is very important activity for everybody. Writing needs some processes of thinking to gather ideas to write a text. In writing process, everybody can develop their thinking and creative skill. One of strategy that be used to develop their writing skill is diary. Diary can be used as a teaching media to help teachers in teaching especially in teaching recount text. In writing diary is same with write daily activity who was happen. By writing diary can help the students to improve their writing skills and motivation towards writing. The formulated of research question is “Is there any significant effect of using diary toward students’ achievement in writing recount text?” Based on the research question, the objectives of this study to find out whether diary is effective to teach students’ writing on recount text or not. The research design in this study is pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test from quantitative approach. The population of this study is tenth grade students of X MIPA SMAN 1 Pakel Tulungagung. The sample is X MIPA 2 class consist of 31 students in the class. The research instrument is a test that are pre-test and post-test to write a recount text. In analyzing the data, the researcher used SPSS 16.0. The result of the study showed that there is significant difference scores on students’ writing recount text before and after being taught by using diary. The mean value before teaching by using diary is 66.19. Meanwhile, the mean value after teaching by using diary is 77.03. After analyzed by using paired sample t-test, the result showed that the number of significance value is 0.000 divided by 2 is 0 and it is smaller than α = 0.05. So, the Null Hypothesis (H0) is rejected. In conclusion of this study, diary can be used as an alternative strategy to teach writing especially in writing recount text for students at Senior High School level. Then, diary can improve the writing skills of the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Pakel Tulungagung.
