Abstract

The Effectiveness of Using Hyponymy toward Students’ Vocabulary Mastery at Seventh Grade Students of MTs Al Ma’arif Tulungagung in Academic Year 2019/2020. Sarjana Thesis. Vocabulary is highly important in foreign language learning. To comprehend the content both oral and written forms, students have to master vocabulary. Without having enough vocabulary, they will get some difficulties in developing the four language skills. In reality almost of students have obstacles to memorize the meaning of the words and remembering new vocabulary. In this circumstance, hyponymy can be used to help students easier to memorize the strange words and also can strengthen students vocabulary mastery. The formulation of the research problem in this study was “Is there any significant improvement of students’ vocabulary mastery before and after being taught using hyponymy at seventh grade students of MTs Al Ma’arif Tulungagung”. The objective of the research was “To know whether there is significance improvement in students’ vocabulary mastery before and after being taught using hyponymy technique at seventh grade students of MTs Al Ma’arif Tulungagung”. The research design was used pre-experimental research design by using one group pre-test post-test with quantitative approach. The population of this research was all students of seventh grade at MTs Al Ma’arif Tulungagung. The sample was the students of seven A class of MTs Al Ma’arif Tulungagung in which the total of them are 33 students consisting of 16 males and 17 females through purposive sampling. The research instrument was tests. The data analysis was analyzed using IBM SPSS 25.0 version by using T-test.The finding showed that Hyponymy was effective used in teaching vocabulary at seventh grade students’ of MTs Al Ma’arif Tulungagung. It can be seen from the mean of total scores of students’ vocabulary mastery before being taught by using hyponymy technique was 62.30. The mean of total scores of students’ vocabulary mastery after being taught by using hyponymy technique was 82.30. Then, the significant p-value is smaller than the significant level (0.000 < 0.05). In other words, Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. The result means that there is any significant improvement of the students’ vocabulary achievement before and after being taught by using Hyponymy.
