Abstract

Keyword:Speech Act, Illocutionary Acts, Context. Illocutionary act is one category of Speech Acts theory which stated by Searle beside Locutionary act and Perlocutionary Act. Illocutionary act is under the umbrella of pragmatics. Speech act become one of the interest in convention beside several proposals that had been formulated. Speech act is kinds of actions performed through utterances. Illocutionary act are used to utter or convey something in the form of word utterances. In this research the writer would analyze the illocutionary act that uttered by the main character in the movie Sherlock Holmes in the first part of the last episode: The Empty Hearse. The movie is written by Mark Gatiss and directed by Jeremy Lowering. The writer, Mark Gatiss, is also being an actor on this movie. Sherlock Holmes movie is serial movie of BBC Television which has 4 series which talk about two years later after the previous episode. It tells about how Sherlock Holmes as the main character back alive nowadays and he comes to meet John, his best friend, to solve the problem of underground network. Sherlock is a private detective that had intelligence over the most people, thus in every part of Sherlock Holmes movie is talked about the case that unsolved yet. The formulations of the research problems were around the types and also forces of illocutionary acts are found in the Sherlock Holmes movie: The Empty Hearse. The objectives of this research were to recognize the types of illocutionary act that had been stated by Searle and also to analyze the illocutionary forces in the movie of Sherlock Holmes: The Empty Hearse. The writer uses qualitative descriptive analysis method. The data collected from the movie’s script then analyzed and describe according to the context and then classify into the category of each type in Illocutionary Act. From the analysis, the writer found that there were 5 types of illocutionary act with their illocutionary forces for each type that appears along the movie script that state only by Sherlock Holmes as the main character in the movie. The 5 types and the forces are Representatives: assert, state, report, conclude, believing. Directives: asking, command, request, warn, suggest, beg, pray, invite. Commissive: refuse, promise, offer, guarantee. Expressive: apologize, deplore, thank, appreciate, congratulate, condolence, welcome. Declarative: nominate
