ABSTRACT Febriani, Belynda Janung. NIM. 1723143024. 2020. The Corpus Analysis of the most Frequently Used Verb in the Children Short Stories for Junior High School Students. Sarjana Thesis English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Muh Basuni, M.Pd. Keywords: Corpus, Children Short Story, Frequency, Verbs Corpora exist for many language and are collected for different purpose. Learner’s dictionary, grammar reference materials, vocabulary learning materials, and more recently, course books have all benefited from the information in corpora. The use of children short stories as corpora are one of suitable secondary materials to be given for students to accompany English textbook as it can stimulate their curiosity and capture their attention better. Children short story characteristically focuses on one core moment of action, and the action always starts near the climax to elaborate the plot. Due to the limitation in the length of the short story, the plot must be highly maintained. In order to find the story interesting and lively from the plot, the used of the appropriate verb to describe the action, the event, the state of the character in the short story is required. Based on that, the formulation of research problems is “What are the most frequently used verb in the children short stories for junior high school students?”. And the objective of the study is to know the most frequently used verb in the children short stories for junior high school students. Research Method: 1) the research design in this study was corpus based study. 2) The data being analyzed was corpus of children short story which collected and downloaded from several website such as: americanliterature.com, www.weareteachers.com., etc.3) the data analysis was conducted by using corpus-specialized freeware, AntConc and TagAnt, in generate wordlist and frequency. Then, the results of the verbs were categorized according to Beth Levin (1993) verb classes. The researcher found highest category of verbs which dominate the corpus is the verbs with predicative compliments class by Levin (1993). It covers verbs such as make, want, feel and do, etc. By investigating the classification of verbs mostly occurring in the corpus, it can be drawn that verbs can be classified according to their relation on meaning and structure. From this, the writer hopes that this will contribute to the knowledge of verbs mastery and its application in the future
