Abstract

Listening takes the main role in language learning because before someone understands and starts to speak, they have to hear the sound, words, and speech pattern first. Harmer (2007) points out that the more the students hear and understand English being spoken, the more they absorb appropriate pitch and intonation, stress and the sounds of both individual words and those which blend together in connected speech. One of the ways to improve listening skill is through listening to Engli sh song every day. The purpose of this study is to know whether there is correlation between frequency in listening to English song and listening comprehension scores in TOEP of 6th semester English Education Department students of IAIN Tulungagung. The method of this study was quantitative method and the design used was correlation technique. The data of the frequency of listening to English song was collected from distributing questionnaire and the data of listening comprehension score in TOEP was obtained from the official website of IAIN Tulungagung in the form of PDF. The sample of this study was 70 students from 7 classes. The result of the computation showed that the correlation coefficient (r) of the the frequency of listening to English songs and listening comprehension scores in TOEP was 0,361. The r-table at the level of significant 5% for 70 respondents was 0,235. It means that r-count was bigger than r-table, so H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. In other words, there was correlation between frequency of listening to English song and listening comprehension scores in TOEP. The value of this correlation was categorized into low correlation. Thus, form the computation, it can be concluded that there was correlation, even though it was low or weak.
