Abstract
Figurative language is part of semantics. Figurative language is a language that uses figurative language or can be interpreted as a beautiful language but does not describe the actual meaning, only figuratively from its meaning. Figurative words are used to give a sense of beauty and emphasis to what is being conveyed. Figurative language is found in various aspects such as in songs. Songs usually consist of figurative language because figurative language is used in well-written lyrics. Basically in finding meaning in a song, semantics is very important because it can find out the meaning and purpose of the song. Songs have unique imaginative qualities in the use of language, such as denotation and connotation. Therefore, this study was used to find out what figurative language used in Idina Menzel selected songs and the meanings used in the songs. The statement of the reseach problem was : What kinds of figurative language are used in Idina Menzel selected songs? And what are the meanings of figurative language used in Idina Menzel selected songs? Then, the objective of the research was to find out the figurative language used in Idina Menzel selected songs and to analyze and describe the meanings of figurative language used in Idina Menzel selected songs. This research uses qualitative content analysis. The data used in this research are 4 Idina Menzel songs entitled (Let It Go, Some Things Never Change, Into the Unknown and Show Your Self). The discussion technique is to formulate problems, collect data, classify data and analyze data. The data is based on the analysis of Keraf theory (2001), Keraf theory (2008), Dewinda theory (2013), Kennedy theory (1983) and Leech theory (2019). The results of this study found that several results from figurative language research and analysis showed that in the 4 songs chosen by Idina Menzel there were 7 types of figurative language and 32 examples of figurative language that appeared. The 7 types of figurative language are personification, idiom, hyperbole, simile, alliteration, metaphor and symbolic. Simile is a very dominant language used in certain Idina Menzel songs. There are 10 lines consisting of similes. In addition, there are 6 lines consisting of hyperbole, 6 symbolic lines, 4 personification lines, 3 metaphor lines, 2 alliteration lines, and 1 idiom line. In addition to getting the results of the figurative language analysis, the researcher also found the results from the analysis of the meaning of figurative language use in four songs that the 4 songs of Idina Menzel both have social meanings and affective meanings. For the researcher can be used to anlysis “song” more deeply by using another linguistics method such as semantic and pragmatics.
