ABSTRACT Rohmat, Mochamad Khoirur. Registered Number 12203183252. Critical Thinking in Students’Argumentative Writings of English Department of UIN SATU Tulungagung. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Sukarsono, M.Pd. Keywords: critical thinking, argumentative writing. This research was conducted because of the phenomenon of the using critical thinking in students’ argumentative writings of English Department of UIN SATU Tulungagung. They have reflected critical thinking but still there are some of problems. Be it comprehension problems, constructing the claims that are too long or even not being able to write the reason well. Students have not fully used their critical thinking in writing of arguments and did not apply all of elements of critical thinking, especially on introductory section of students’ thesis. This study aims to reveal the critical thinking elements that exist in students' argumentative writings as well as to reveal the patterns of argumentation used by students in writing arguments. In the critical thinking context, there are 4 elements that must be met in a series of arguments; they are claim, reason, evidence and conclusion. In this study the researcher used descriptive qualitative as research design. The researcher took 10 theses from students' of English Department of UIN SATU Tulungagung in their thesis especially on the introductory section and it classified as good essay to be data source by applying random sampling technique. In this case, the researcher focuses on analyzing critical thinking element which found in the introductory section or the background of the student's thesis. This is because, this chapter can show students' critical thinking skills, especially in making arguments to convey their ideas, knowledge, and thoughts. In addition, researchers can detect patterns of writing arguments in it. In order to obtain the proper and systematic data, the researcher becomes the main instrument. In analyzing the researchers used data analysis techniques from Miles and Hubermen, they are data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. To examine the critical thinking element use in students' argumentative writings the researcher uses Alec Fisher Theory. The results show that all elements of the 4 elements which have been proposed by Alec Fisher are used to build the argument although there are some arguments that do not apply critical thinking elements so that the arguments are included in the category of incomplete arguments or less critical. However all of the essays contain the base element, these elements are claim. Additionally the 3 supporting elements reason, evidence, and conclusion are also consistently involved or there are in students' argumentative writings in order to support and strengthen the claim. So it can be concluded that students of English Department of UIN SATU Tulungagung are quite critical in writing arguments on thesis, especially in the background or introduction.
