Abstract

People should understand ellipsis to communicate so the communication more effective and not repetitive. In this study, the researcher connects the ellipsis with examining a movie because movie contains dialogue that refers to the used of ellipsis. Hence, the researcher concerns with the study entitled The Analysis of Ellipsis on the Main Character’s Utterances in the “Rise” Movie. The researcher analyzed the types of ellipsis based on theory of Halliday and Matthiessen. The formulations of the problem in writing this thesis are (1) What types of ellipsis are found on the main character's utterances in the “Rise” movie?, (2) What is the dominant type of ellipsis used on the main characters’ utterances in the “Rise” movie?, and (3) How are the ellipsis used on the main character's utterances in the “Rise” movie? In this study, the descriptive qualitative method was used. Descriptive qualitative method was used because the data analysis presented descriptively. The data of this research is in the form of utterances containing ellipsis by the main characters in “Rise” movie. The steps to analyze the data are; First the researcher reducing the data. Second, the researcher is displaying the data. Third, the researcher found the dominant type of ellipsis. Then, the researcher explain how the used of ellipsis. Last, the researcher concluding the data by discussion the data based on the findings. The results of the study are (1) There are three types of ellipsis in this movie, namely nominal ellipsis 17 (27,41%), verbal ellipsis 23 (37,09%), and clausal ellipsis 22 (35,50%) based on the main characters’ utterances. (2) Verbal ellipsis is the dominant type of ellipsis used by the main characters’ utterances in “Rise” movie, which has 23 (37,09%) ellipsis. (3) The main characters tend to use the nominal ellipsis on the deictic element. This is because the deictic element is mostly of the class of determiner, demonstrative, possessive, and articles which appear a lot in both spoken and written dialogue. Next, the main characters use both types of verbal ellipsis, lexical ellipsis and operator ellipsis in their utterances. Then, clausal ellipsis uses by the main characters utterances in two part structure which consists of modal and prepositional elements. The main characters use ellipsis in their dialogues in order to make the utterances in the movie clearer and less verbose.
